The Wetumpka Public Library sponsors an annual Summer Library Program for grades 1-6.  There are special activities designed to encourage children to enjoy reading and maintain their reading skills.  The children are given journals to log the books they read.  Their journal entitles them to special awards at the end of the program.  In addition, children are encouraged to keep up with how much time they spend reading.  Research carried out by the U.S. Department of Education shows that higher reading levels are achieved by students who read outside of school.  Support at home for reading also has a very positive impact on their achievement.  This library and the Alabama Public Library Service sponsor the Summer Library Program each year.
